So Your Misses Got Hyperemesis (Gravidarum)

Chapter 4: Eating With Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Part 7: Your Wife Can’t Eat? TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) in Hyperemesis Gravidarum

If despite all your efforts your wife is unable to eat and is losing weight rapidly and drastically, there is another option you should consider and discuss with the doctors – Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).

Total Parenteral Nutrition is a treatment designed for patients who cannot eat orally or digest food. In this treatment, nutrients are given to the patient in the form of a solution through an IV.

Although my wife had severe hyperemesis gravidarum, fortunately, she did not reach the point where she needed TPN. Through support groups on social media, we met several women whose hyperemesis gravidarum was so extreme that they had to receive TPN. These women could not eat anything, lost significant amounts of weight (one of them lost 12 kg by week 24), and sometimes the treatment involved a prolonged hospital stay lasting several weeks.

TPN treatments are provided in the hospital or through home hospitalization. They should be considered in very extreme cases in hyperemesis. I sincerely hope your wife does not reach such a state.

But if all your efforts are not working, it is important to be aware of this option and to ask the doctors their opinion about it for your wife. When used correctly, TPN can save your wife and your baby.

Therefore, stay vigilant. If your wife is consistently losing weight, her vitals are dropping rapidly, and she cannot eat or drink at all, talk to your doctor, express your concern, and do not hesitate to ask if your wife needs TPN
